Frankfurt Am Main - Best Of

Städel
Originally founded for didactic purposes, the Städel is now one of Europe's most comprehensive art galleries, with paintings ranging from German, Dutch and Italian Primitives to the avant-garde.

Brotfabrik
Brotfabrik is one of the city's most original performance venues, featuring live and disco music from all over the world, with salsa, African and Asian sounds prominent; it also has a restaurant and a café.

Goethehaus
The Goethehaus is the childhood home of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the all-round genius who is Germany's most revered man of letters. It has been restored to look as it did when he lived there, with a few original items which somehow survived the war.

Karmeliterkloster
The secularized Karmeliterkloster (Carmelite Monastery), which now serves as a venue for exhibitions of contemporary art, contains powerful fresco cycles by the sixteenth-century painter turned revolutionary leader Jerg Ratgeb.

St Bartholomäus Cathedral
The Gothic cathedral of St Bartholomäus, the ancient venue for the election and coronation of the Holy Roman Emperors, has an idiosyncratic single tower which you can climb for a fabulous view over the city.

Sachsanhausen
Frankfurt is Europe's cider metropolis, and the main cluster of its distinctive apple wine taverns, like the popular Zum Eichkatzerl, is in Alt-Sachsanhausen, the heart of the historic south bank quarter.

Schirn Kunsthalle
Dubbed the "Federal Bowling Alley" because of its tunnel-like shape, the Schirn Kunsthalle is a cultural centre which hosts world-class temporary exhibitions of archeology, old masters and modern art.

Liebieghaus
The Liebieghaus is Germany's premier specialist museum of sculpture, with exhibits ranging from the ancient civilizations of Sumeria, Egypt, Greece and Rome through to the colossal altarpieces of European Baroque.

Bockenheim
Many of Frankfurt's liveliest bars, cafés and restaurants are in Bockenheim, a working-class district which, thanks to an influx of students, immigrants and bohemian intellectuals, has become the centre of the city's alternative scene.

Museum für Angewandte Kunst
Superbly displayed in a discreetly innovative building by the American Richard Meier, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst features large collections of decorative art from Europe, the Islamic world and the Far East.
